“Lord Lathrens of the Honor Guard” Custom Squadt by Josh “fplus” Pearce (@fplus)

This custom hit the artist’s Flickr without much extra information, backstory, or promotion; but I’m assuming it was a commission. You can see more shots in the artist’s Flickr set. Lord Lathrens is obviously amazing and has an insane helmet accessory to complete to his outfit. Not much else to say, other than the fact that fplus continues to maintain his spot in my brain as the customizer who I think is the best.

Custom Spawn Dunny and “Bantashian Guard” Custom Squadt by Josh “fplus” Pearce

About the “Bantashian Guard,” from the artist (via):

“The Banteshians are not a people per se, but the spirit of the forest itself. The Majik energy of the forest God Bantesh, is concentrated and born into a tangible warrior weaved from the resources of the forest. They serve as vigilant sentries, guarding The more important and secretive groves and villages of Bantesh’s domain. Although the guards often take the form of a solitary being, they are actually comprised of many consciousnesses, as several spirits work in tandem to control and manipulate the visage of the guard, making them incredibly difficult for mortals to best in combat, as should be expected when dealing with a sliver of a God itself.”

First off, I have no idea how I missed it - but fplus is a huge Spawn fan! Check out this Flickr set with his earlier, numerous Spawn customs. It’s obviously well done, but it is impossible to not be more impressed by the second custom above as that is an absolutely epic custom Squadt. Already having conquered the small arena of Coarse customizers (or at least tied with Kevin Gosselin, the champ), it looks like artist Josh Pearce is looking to show he’s also the sickest when it comes to the Squadt platform. Check out this Flickr set to see the detail of this figure’s accessories, extraordinary sculpting, and perfect painting.

My personal opinion of fplus is that he is probably the best customizer right now, in a very close race with Kevin Gosselin and Huck Gee. Furthermore, while his work is going for a premium among the general pool of vinyl toy customizers - given the detail on his pieces, that doesn’t translate to a high hourly right now. As more people discover this artist’s work and the larger art community accepts custom toys as something to value, I would expect a Josh Pearce original like this to absolutely skyrocket in cost. If I had four figures to spend on customs fplus would be getting all of it, as I believe it is an excellent investment in art and a really good person. If you have a bigger bankroll than me, you may want to check out his store or hit him up to see how deep his commission list is.

“Dark Lord: Set Varsa” Custom Squadt by Josh “fplus” Pearce

fplus_dark_lord_squadt.jpg

From the artist (via):

“Far beyond the mortal veil, the Dark Lord’s reach slowly creeps from the daemon lands to the civilizations of honest men, twisting their hearts to pump the black blood of hate. Set Varsa’s touch, is the burn of drallian’s fire, Frost king’s breath, and broken glass all at once. His gaze alone can twist and break the bones of lesser men, and his legion, is a tidal wave of pure terror. Were it not for the ever vigilant watch of the Silhouette tower, Set Varsa would be like a ravenous pack of insatiable wolves set loose amongst the 12 houses. But Set Varsa is above all else clever and cunning, and where there is a will, there is a way….”

You can see many more shots, including those showing the helmet off, in the artist’s Flickr set. Not that the Squadt needs much help in selling as soon as they become available, but I personally think fplus’s customs have added a lot to the world those toys live in and make it a more appealing figure to purchase.

“Ice Kiss Mammophant”

About the Ice Kiss Mammophant, from the artist (via):

“Mammophants, normally fairly passive creatures in nature, are often used as siege beasts because they are tough, can carry tremendous amounts of weight, and are not easily shaken by combat. A well bred Mammophant, is a powerful tool for any army.

The Ice’s Kiss mammophant, is native to the arctic plains of Ghalaed, where it is not only frozen outside, but also on the inside of the large beast. This species of mammophant carries a chilling wind in it’s lungs that when unleashed, will freeze it’s prey solid where it stands. This mammophant is armored in the gilding of the Queen’s personal army, and has a catapult mounted on it’s back to throw small gliding bombers from it’s back.”

Taking a brief pause from making his “The Corrupter” figure a reality since receiving full funding through Kickstarter, fplus attacked some of his pending commissions. He just wrapped up a Sub Zero Jaws Figure too, leading to a very impressive couple of weeks. I love all of these pieces but the “Spirit Bender of the Crystalline Theater” strikes me as my favorite Big Sal custom to date.
