“The Once and Future King” Custom 7” Munny (@HughDredRose)
Created for Tenacious Toys’ “The Candy-Coated Custom Show” at The London Candy Company Inc in New York. I completely bricked on posting those customs, but I need to start by posting my favorite. You can get more shots and info from this Kidrobot forum thread. Not surprisingly, this guy sold for $500 fairly quickly. Hugh Rose’s False Idols Series 1: “Sky Monkeys”
It’s totally possible I haven’t paid enough attention, but it seems to me that Hugh Rose has been releasing customs at a faster pace than before, while also improving steadily. These seven custom four inch custom Munnys, with the first two shots above being the same figure, the second image showing the glow-in-the-dark elements, went for $175/each on March 20th and sold out on the day of release. My favorite is his “Rose Cherry Blossom Monkey,” which sold to super-collector Eduardo “vinyltoyz” Olegario. You can see his shot here, and once you finish reading this post - consider checking out this Flickr set to be absolutely amazed. Roughly two weeks after the release of these figures (today), Hugh showed the Kidrobot forums three more customs and has announced Series 2 (“The Conger and the Cormorant”) will be coming out within the next few months. Super excited! Get more Hugh Rose AKA DRED (Readers’ Wives Collective) on his Website | Shop | Twitter | Facebook Check out our previous posts on Hugh Rose here.
“Timber!” Custom 3” Chuckboy 2Tone Dunny by Hugh Rose
From the artist: “Timber is a clumsy lumberjack. So clumsy that he has, over the years, accidentally hacked off all but one of his own limbs. Luckily there is lots off wood lying around to make repairs…” I bet Lfarnc is jealous! This is such a cute custom and Hugh has said that the collector is commissioning a second piece from him, so I’m excited to see what follows. New Dunny Customs from Hugh Rose: “Japanese Smiley” (3 inch) and “The Navigator” (8 inch)
The first images are of “Japanese Smiley,” which was a commission by legendary custom collector Moonshot and the second custom is “The Navigator.” From the artist:
“The Navigator is a mysterious fisherman who can sometimes be seen fishing off the coast of Guernsey, my island home. His knowledge of the treacherous local reefs and submerged rocks is unrivalled, and he has been fishing for so long that his beard is woven into a fishing net. The fish he has caught in his beard is a fully functional wind-up toy, although it looks like his swimming days are over! This piece is the result of my research into the history of the island of Guernsey, where I have lived since I was 7 years old. The character was first created for a chalk drawing I made on the beach closest to my house, which is an old fisherman’s house just off the seafront. I then developed the idea in my live drawing at the ‘Icons’ custom toy show in Leeds, England. In the dunny version, I have included many references to navigation, as the sea around Guernsey is highly treacherous and had to be navigated skillfully before the days of GPS. On his head there are some fictional constellations I created, including a cormorant, a bird native to Guernsey that really captured my imagination when I arrived off the boat as a young boy. The lighthouse on his left ear is a real light house that is visible from my house, the Casquets lighthouse. I’m extremely impressed with Hugh’s work and really love “The Navigator.” It’s so much cooler that there is a history behind the piece. If you are looking to purchase a custom from this artist, you can hit up his contact form to commission him and if you’d rather buy a one-of-a-kind custom right now, his 1000% Be@rbrick is still available.
